Born at Haasts Bluff, Mary attended school there until she was eleven. When Limpi Tjapangati (Mary's maternal grandfather) passed away, the family moved to Papunya. Mary is the niece of Beyula Napanangka, but it was her aunt Larabelle who suggested she paint her grandfather’s stories. Mary remembers watching him working on his canvases. Mary joined Papunta Tjupi in 2008 and elements of Limpi’s distinctive style are discernible in Mary’s early work, which has since developed its own strong character.
